Grocery shopping & Fish Amnesty Day.

Hallo meine Lieben,

happy Fish Amnesty Day! "Fish Amnesty Day is a day to recognize fish as living animals with rights and in need of protection just the same as other vertebrates." Good idea I would say. You can find more information here.

I went grocery shopping this week and I thought I could share my vegan finds with you. I like to read posts like that on other blogs but please let me know if you think that this is totally boring.

So, here is what I got (and I am sorry for the quality but I only have my iPhone camera right now).

1. Veggie Life - Vegan Mayonnaise.

The funny thing is that I never even liked mayonnaise before I went vegan. But when I saw this in the grocery store I had to give it a try. Maybe it is just too exciting to resist when you find the vegan version of a product that you have never seen before. I don't know. But wow, it tastes so good. I doubt that "real" mayonnaise tastes that good. I made some potatoes with veggies last night and ate it with the mayonnaise and to be honest - I had to stop myself from eating the whole pot.

2. Veggie Aufschnitt.

I got this at Aldi. I am surprised about the big selection for vegans at Aldi, American Aldi does not have anything like that. They should really think about selling some vegan products. But yeah, this one is my favorite. I love to eat it with my Brötchen. I am German, I need my Brötchen in the morning.

3. Carrefour Chocolate Soy pudding.

Oh, I love pudding. I can't even tell you how much. I could eat a huge bowl of pudding every day. Freshly cooked pudding is the best (do you love or hate the pudding skin? I know that's a huge debate. I LOVE the pudding skin so I always use huge bowls when I make pudding to get as much skin as possible). But yeah, I found this pudding in France and it is pretty good.

4. Hummus.

In America I eat Hummus every single day and I have to say that you can find a bigger selection of hummus in American groceries stores but I was able to find this one in a German store. It is really good but I usually prefer the roasted pepper hummus.

5. Soyananda -Vegan cream cheese.

This one is soooo good. They also have one with herbs and one with tomato I think. But I like to eat the plain one with vegan "Nutella". I know a lot of people who think that's gross but I just love it. It's the perfect combination.

6. Quinoa

I have to say that I never used quinoa before but I found some recipes in a cook book and I want to give them a try. Do you have any good recipes with quinoa? Please let me know!

7. Soy Drink Vanilla.

I usually prefer almond milk but this one is pretty great too. I used it for smoothies, in my coffee and you can even eat it in mashed potatoes if you like it when they taste like vanilla. I do.

8. "Erdbäriger" Tee - Strawberry Tea.

I drink several cups of tea every day. This package has a cute hedgehog and a cute bear on it so I had to buy it. I am like a little child sometimes but I just couldn't resist. It also tastes pretty great. Strawberries are always good. I also like the pun:
Erdbeere means strawberry.
Bär means bear.
--> Erdbäriger Tee.
Pretty great.

9. Bach flowers tea.

I got this as an extra in the natural foods store. I haven't tried it yet but tea is always good.

10. Semolina pudding (for babies).

I just love that stuff...I mean, it is not just for babies. the package says you have to be 4 months or older. Which I am. So I am allowed to eat this. I usually mix it with some fruits and agave syrup.

11. Wilmersburger - vegan cheese.

This is my favorite German vegan cheese. I got three different types: Cheddar Style, Pilze (mushrooms), Würzig (Spicy). The spicy one is my favorite. I had the cheddar style cheese for breakfast this morning and I also like it a lot. And I haven't tried the mushroom one yet but I am sure it will be good too. I am always amazed by the great selection of vegan food...it was pretty hard to find vegan/vegetarian food when I stopped eating meat but now you can find vegan products in almost every store.

Okay, I forgot to take a picture of this one.

de Rit Organics - Chocoreale Duo

As you can see, I already ate some of this. It is just too good. It's basically a mix of vegan "Nutella" and some white cream. Perfect in the mix with the cream cheese.

What did you buy on your last grocery shopping trip? What are your favorite products? Any recommendations?

Have a lovely Saturday!

  4. You have never had quinoa before? I love it! I typically make mine and mix it with: oven roasted broccoli, yam, and kale (tossed in olive oil, chili flakes and s&p), grape tomatoes, cashews or sliced almonds, dried cranberries, feta, mint leaves, and a bit of lime juice. It's my favourite! I guess you would need to take out the feta to make it vegan :) ~Stephanie

  5. Oh, I went to a raw food store today and they had the most amazing looking cheeses, the only problem is they were really quite expensive :(

    Nice finds!

    1. Yeah, I agree, some of the vegan cheeses are really expensive. These were not that bad so I could not say no. :)

  6. Waaait! Since when are you in Germany? That would have been the perfect opportunity, to meet you, but now, I am in Sweden! :-)
I love the Alnatura stuff and the things from Aldi, as it is easy and conevient to buy and find. Our Edeka in my hometown has some nice vegan stuff, too.
I guess, I would love that vegan nutella-cream thing, as well. It's sweet and it's chocolate! :-D

The Alnatura stuff is really good! They have a great selection of delicious vegan things! I need to check out an Edeka store!
And yeah, I am sure you would love the nutella-thing! It is very chocolat-y and yummy!

  8. What a sweet holiday - Happy Fish Amnesty Day to you, too, Katrin! Thanks for sharing this awesome grocery products (I <3 grocery posts, too!). The Soyananda vegan cream cheese looks really good and I also prefer almond milk (tastes better than soy milk, however great for cooking). I really want to try the Wilmersburger cheese, you are making me want to go back to Germany soon!

We bought some ingredients to make a Tuscan white bean stew (one of the recipes on my blog) and it turned out fantastic with the dried sage we found and tonight I will be making fried rice. It seems like a lot of work to plan and prepare our meals in Buenos Aires because of the limited ingredients and the smaller shops compared to anywhere else - in Asia, we can eat out cheaply, in Europe/UK/Australia/NZ, we can find prepared vegan dishes/cheese/meat alternatives to make anything easily and of course, there's hummus everywhere, but not here in Buenos Aires (which is rare, unless at a nicer cafe or vegan restaurant).

My favorite "most recent" product is the Violife cheese, but of course I am a huge fan of Sojasun and Provamel products.

    Have a great Sunday!

    1. I am glad you like grocery posts too! I always enjoy reading yours so much! They always inspire me! I am so glad I found this vegan cream cheese! It is definitely my favorite so far. It is really creamy and yummy! And you definitely have to try the Wilmersburger cheese! Maybe you can find it outside of Germany!

I am sorry that it is not that easy to find vegan stuff in Buenos Aires. But the Tuscan white bean stew sounds so delicious! I need to try to make it too!

I found an online store which sells the Violife cheese so I need to order it! I want to try it too. I have only heard great things about it!

Have a great Sunday as well!

  9. I have never liked mayonnaise either which is why I find it so surprising that people in Belgium and the Netherlands (and maybe other places, too!) put it on everything! When I ordered some chips at a cafe in Amsterdam, she brought me half a dozen packets of mayo with them. It was my first time seeing that and I was like, "What in the world are these for?" :o) I prefer my chips with ketchup! Does vegan mayo leave you with that heavy feeling in your stomach that real mayo does? I've been looking for a suitable substitute to use when a recipe calls for it.

    1. Yeah, some people really put mayonnaise on everything. :) It's pretty funny. I only used it in potato salad I guess but I have always preferred yogurt for that. I don't like it with chips/fries either. And no, as far as I can tell, it does not leave you with a heavy feeling in your stomach. I have only tried it once but I felt totally fine afterwards. The funny thing is that I feel so much better after meals since I went vegan. I don't know if it is just me but I don't get a heavy feeling on my stomach anymore. I think you could give it a try!

  10. I would definitely buy tea for the cute pictures. I guess I'm a child too ;-)

I once tried to make raita with soja yoghurt for a curry night (my friend is lactose intolerant). It took me FOREVER to get it to taste right! I had to use almost triple the normal amount of mint sauce and add a tiny bit of sugar. The soya yoghurt was just soooo sour!

    1. I am glad I am not the only child here. :) I love to buy anything in a cute package!

I agree, there are some pretty sour soya yogurts but there are also some really creamy ones. I had to test a couple of them to find out what works and what does not. I totally understand the problem you had with the curry!

  11. Hi, Katrin! :) It's so good to be back here after such a long time!

Wow! So many products I'd never even heard of! I have to say the last one is the one that looks the most appealing to me. I recently tried Tofurky sausages and didn't like them, the texture is too weird. We've been buying a lot of organic products lately and have fallen in love with them :).

Hope you have a wonderful week!

    Hugs!

    1. Hey Miki,
it is so good to have you back! I have missed you a lot! I will respond to your message as soon as possible. I hope I will get to that tonight or tomorrow at the latest!
I haven't tried Tofurky sausages yet but I heard from so many people that they loved them! But most of them are vegans so maybe that is why. I can understand that the texture might be weird for non-vegans. I really love organic products. They make you feel so much better. :)
      Have a great week!

  13. Wow, I never imagined at normal supermarkets catered such a broad range of vegan products! I'm not a vegan myself (not even vegetarian) but I'm becoming more and more concours about what I eat and lately I'm eating more vegetables and fruits - and feeling better than ever! Lighter and with more energy :) I'm a big hummus fan, love it! And it's so easy to cook!
I just heard on the radio that today is Vegetarians World Day - or at least that's what I understood! Anyway, have a great day!

    1. Yeah, it was totally different a couple of years ago but the stores seem to realize that there are many vegetarians and vegans out there now. I love it! I really try to eat as healthy as possible but sometimes you just need some pudding or chips. :)
Oh, I totally forgot about World Vegetarian day! That is so awesome. :)
And hummus is soooo good! Glad you like it too!

  14. Aaaaaaand now I'm hungry. ;)

I do have some quinoa suggestions! Quinoa is really easy to cook with. You can use it instead of rice or other grains.

You can make a salad - just cook a couple of cups of quinoa, chop up any veggies you have (I like onion, tomato, red onion and pepper), throw in a drizzle of olive oil, pepper and salt and pepper to taste and some herbs - fresh basil and cilantro if you have them. You could also add some vegan cheese or chickpeas if you want.

I also sometimes cook some up, keep it in a tupperware container in the fridge and throw a handful on top of salad. It adds some protein and because it doesn't have a strong flavour, it goes with pretty much any dressing. Yum!

    1. Thanks for the salad idea! I will definitely give that a try. The only thing I will skip is using onions. I can't help myself but I just can't eat them. I eat everything (that is vegan) but I can't make myself eat onions.
But yeah, it seems like you can use quinoa for pretty much anything! Thanks for the tip!
