Five Things. Lots of cancelled flights, a monk seal adoption and de-clawing.

Hallo meine Lieben,

I hope you all had a wonderful start into the new year and you are enjoying your weekend. Sorry that I did not have much time for blogging lately but hopefully I will find some more time soon. I can't wait to tell you guys all about David's trip to Germany and our adventures there.
He finally made it back home after 38,5 hours of traveling. Unbelievable. I felt so bad for him. I think they cancelled 3 of his flights and the others ones were all delayed. I admire his ability to stay calm in such situations. I know how terrible he felt after so many hours of traveling and no sleep.

Please check out my friend Celeste's Five Things as well.

1. A monk seal adoption.

David knows me so well: he adopted a monk seal family for me as a Christmas present. I can't even tell you how excited I was. That was one of the best presents ever. The donation helps to protect imperiled animals and preserve their vital habitats which I think is a very important thing to do. You can do the same at the homepage of Defenders Of Wildlife. There are many different animals you can choose from and they all need our help. I love "my" monk seal and named him Rupert. Can you believe that there are only 1300-1400 Hawaiian monk seals left in the wild? They definitely need help and protection!

2. This cookbook.

Another Christmas present! I got so many books, I could not believe it! By the way, thanks again to all you lovely people who send me Christmas wishes and cards, presents and all your love. I love all of you! You guys absolutely rock my world! Well, this book weighs a ton and David had to bring it in his suitcase. Thanks for that! You rock so much! It is full of delicious recipes and I can't wait to try them all. The first one I chose is the Smoky Incan Stew with quinoa and sweet potatoes. But trust me, all the recipes sound and look mouth-watering. One of my plans for 2014 is to try more recipes. I need more variety in my diet.

3. This ad.

Seriously, before I came to America I did not even hear about de-clawing. I could have never imagined that people actually do it. Just to protect their furniture and crap like that. But I had to learn the truth and it really really shocked me. It should be a crime to de-claw your cats and vets who actually practice this should lose their license. It is animal abuse. Period.

4. This movie.

David and I went to see this movie in Luxembourg because not many German movie theaters show movies in their original English version (at least not in small Saarland) which makes me really sad because I really can't watch dubbed movies or shows anymore. It just sounds so wrong. I loved this movie so much, it is beautiful and inspiring and makes you feel good. I especially love the traveling aspect of the movie. Yay Iceland!

5. A vegan cleanse.

Have any of you ever tried a cleanse or know something about it? It would be interesting to see how it makes me feel so I am thinking about trying one. I usually eat pretty healthy except of all the Christmas candy but I guess it would be an interesting experience and can't hurt.

Have a happy Sunday!

De-clawing is so cruel, can't believe how heartless people can be, even for their own pets :X

You already know that I am in love with Walter Mitty!
I had never heard of de-clawing cats before either - it's just plain horrible! Period.

  3. 1. Rupert is so cute! What a great gift!
    2. That recipe sounds delicious. Maybe I'll try that this week.
    3. Agreed!
    4. The scenery is beautiful! I'd love to travel to Iceland someday.

    5. It depends on where you're starting, where you're headed and what you drink. The juices you drink are sometimes really high in sugar, so you feel great but you're really just riding a sugar rush and not necessarily getting any extra nutrients. You have to read the labels, it's like anything else, and make sure you're getting ones with veggies and protein, not just fruit juices.

I did a juice cleanse one year though because I was really out of whack and needed to reset my body, so I got a bunch of the Bolthouse juices in the green, berry and vitamin C varieties. (http://www.bolthouse.com/) The Green Goodness smoothie tastes weird but it really does pack a punch. After five days of just drinking the juices I felt so much better. But, I was coming from a place of constantly being sick, trying to totally flush my system of toxins and flood it with nutrients so I could kick off a new healthy diet. If you already eat fairly healthy you probably won't notice that much of a change in your overall health, aside from that glowy sugar rush that I mentioned, and while you'll probably loose a few pounds they will mostly come back as soon as you go back to regular food.

So unless you're really desperate for that kind of kick in the butt, I don't think they're worthwhile; they make you super cranky (no caffeine or alcohol, remember), you'll probably be hungry because you're not eating solid food, and, ahem, they'll have you running for the ladies' room a lot. And by a lot I mean on the hour. So plan ahead! Maybe just do one over a long weekend, when you can stay home and read all day to distract yourself.

    1. 1. I love that gift so much. A fantastic idea. My plush monk seal is keeping me company on the couch right now.
      2. Let me know if you try the recipe!
      3. So cruel! And people even think it is okay to do it!
      4. Iceland would be so fantastic! Hope we can both travel there someday!
      5. Thanks so much for sharing your wisdom with me! I am always so happy that I can talk to you about things like that. I am really not sure if I should do it...I can get pretty cranky when I am hungry! Maybe I could give it a try over the weekend but I guess I should not do it for a longer period of time. I guess I need my normal food. Maybe it makes more sense to just go back to some healthier eating and cut out the gummi bears and stuff like that I had recently! Thanks so much for your help and support, it really means a lot!

  5. I so love your gift - what a wonderful idea to make a seal adoption a Christmas gift :) And his name fits perfectly! That cookbook looks great. Would love it if you share some things that were good when you tried them.
Seriously??? Cat de-clawing? I've never heard of it and I don't think I want to ever hear it again. That is sick :(
That movie sounds like something I'd love watching.
Hmm, no, I didn't hear of a vegan cleanse yet, but I'd also love hearing more about that, too, when you find something out :)
Ich drücke Dich gaaaaanz feste, liebste Katrin. Hab eine tolle Woche!

  6. Rupert is such a sweetie! Monk seals are so cute. It's so tragic how many endangered species there are.

  10. Happy New Year to you. What lovely gifts. I have never heard of declawing before. It sounds awful. I'm sure it wouldn't be allowed here in the UK, Makes me shudder just to think of it

    1. Thank you so much! Happy new year to you as well! It seems like de-clawing is not allowed in the EU which is more than just right. I can't understand that you can do things like that in America. It is a shame!

  11. 38.5 hours of traveling, that's a really long time! Good to read that your husband arrived safe in the States. And I hope that you're doing well there with that freezing weather everyone's talking about - though I have the feeling you're still in Europe.

I've seen the trailer of that movie during the holidays and it looked like a quirky one, but if it's setin Iceland I should really go and watch it. I would really love to go to Iceland any time soon :)

Have a lovely weekend, Katrin! LG

    1. It really is way too long. I felt so bad for him.I mean, a night at the airport is not the greatest thing to do. It is getting warmer there now.

I am sure you would enjoy the movie too. It is so fascinating and funny and cute.

Have a great weekend, Irene! I will write more soon!
