Ten On Tuesday. Mean English expressions, chips for lunch and cancelled shows.

Hallo meine Lieben,

I hope you all had a fabulous weekend and are doing fine! I am linking up with lovely Lin from  Linny's Vault for another Ten On Tuesday.

1. I hate the fact that they cancelled "Go On". I really really liked that show and I have no idea why they did not give it a chance. Seems like I have to start to watch Friends again. You can never get enough of that.

2. It sucks when funny Mother's Day videos make you cry in the end because you are not able to show them to your own Mom.

3. I tend to stress out really easily. So I think I should make a list of things that make me happy. And every time I stress out, I will look at that list, pick something from this list to do, look at, smell, think of, whatever. And hopefully it will make me feel better.

4. My mean English expression of the day is "grocery shopping". I hate to say the word "groceries" so I try to avoid it as much as I can. Instead I say that I need to go to the supermarket. Some words are just not made for Germans.

5. I think it is a very German thing to end English sentences with "right?". Like "We will go grocery shopping later, right?". I am pretty sure nobody else does that, only Germans. I catch myself doing that a lot.  I think people will always be able to hear my German roots.

6. It is so funny to see that so many people eat chips for lunch. I have never seen that in Germany.  It is totally normal for Americans but it always makes me laugh when David eats chips with his burger. For me, chips are an evening snack which I eat on my couch while watching a movie.

7. Well I guess it was weird for David when I told him to eat fried potato patties (in German Reibekuchen, in my dialect Grumperküchelcha) with apple sauce.

8. I never check my Facebook feed.

9. I am absolutely in the mood for some rhubarb pie. Rhabarberkuchen in German. I think I haven't eaten it for over 10 years.

10. Grumpy Cat must have heard a really awful story. Kidney stones are horrible.

  1. Potato patties with applesauce sounds great to me! Tell David he is a weirdo. :P

I made a whole Pinterest board of things that make me feel happy and less stressed, so when I'm stressed out I can look at it and feel better. A list of things that make you happy is a good idea!

    1. Oh, he absolutely loved it! I just thought that it might have been a weird combination for him!

I like the idea with the Pinterest board! I think I will do the same! Thanks for the tip!

  2. I love all the German vs American things. That's super interesting that you don't feel like you can say grocery right. :-)

    1. There are lots of differences between the two countries and it is so much fun to discover them. And yeah, I really think I sound like an idiot when I say it.

  3. I, too, love all the German vs American things. Although, saying "right" at the end of a sentence seems normal to me. I don't say it, I don't think, but it doesn't seem weird.

    1. Glad you like it!
Hmm, I never heard anybody else saying that. I use it a lot and I heard about other Germans doing it too so I assumed it is a German thing. :)

  4. that's so interesting that you Germans don't eat chips like how we eat chips! I love learning fun things like that.

  5. It's so funny how different cultures enjoy their food! I don't think anything of the way I eat food but I'd probably have a panic attack in another country when they offer completely different foods :)

    1. Haha, yeah, there are always some things that you have to get used to. I love to discover new things!

  6. I'm American and always have eaten potato pancakes (latkes for us Jews) with applesauce and sour cream, I always thought it was a Jewish thing, but maybe it's actually a German thing?

    1. Interesting! Maybe it is a Jewish thing and that is how it started in Germany!

    2. I think, it's a German Jew thing. My husband is half jewish and his grandma still speaks a bit of yiddish. I'm always fascinated by how many things are so similar between the Jewish cuisine and German cuisine.

    3. That is interesting! I really did not know about this! I like that it is German Jewish! :) Thanks for letting us know!

  7. We always did potato pancakes with applesauce in Wisconsin too, but we've got tons of Germans there. :) As for the language, it's tricky going this way too. I've never heard those words for potato pancakes... Here in nürnberg it's Kartoffelpuffer, or 'Bagger' more often. The box at the store says Kartoffelpuffer but no one seemed to know what the hell I was talking about. Total German Fail for me.

    1. Hmm, I really don't know where it comes from. I have always thought it is typical German!
You are right, I guess they are mostly called Kartoffelpuffer. But you can also say Reibekuchen. In my dialect we use that weird name. I have never heard "Bagger" before!

    1. I try to ignore it as much as I can too but it was all over the internet last Sunday which made it a little harder!

  9. It always surprised me that potato chips aren't bigger in Germany when everything else potato is! I do love Reibekuchen though. Also, I also feel weird when I say groceries here, so I avoid it too haha

    1. Yeah, Germans love their potatoes. I do like potato chips a lot, it would just never occur to me to eat them for lunch.
Glad I am not the only one who avoids to say "groceries".

  10. Rhabarberkuchen - oh, ja bitte!!! I always have difficulties with words that have too many s' or th's in them... they are like tongue twisters. And, now I have to pay attention if I do the 'right' thing at the end of a sentence. I do think, I've notice my friend doing it! :)

    1. Rharbarberkuchen is sooo delicious!
You are right, too many "s" or "th" or mean! They are not made for Germans!
Let me know if you do the "right" thing too! :)

  11. 1. I was so bummed when I heard it was cancelled. Loved this show.
    2. Aw, I'm sorry sweets. If you like I can ship my mom your way for a few months :)
    3. That sounds like a fantastic idea.
    4. Haha, why dont you like to say it; is it an accent thing? Now that you mention it, I hardly ever use groceries or grocery store. Always say, "I'm going to the market."
    5. Hm...yeah, I don't say that.
    6. Chips are pretty much any time of the day snacks for me. Get in my belly!
    7. Do those taste like hash-browns? Cause if they do, I'll take some! But hold the applesauce & pass the ketchup.
    9. I've never had this kind of pie before. Might have to try it soon.
    10. omg this is hilarious! Dont think I've laughed so hard all week.

    1. 1. Yeah, I really loved that show and I don't understand the decision.
      2. Sure! :)
      3. I will give it a try!
      4. I don't know if it an accent thing. It just feels so wrong when I say it and it sounds better when everybody else says it. But glad you avoid it too!
      5. :)
      6. I like chips too. A lot. I just never had them for lunch.
      7. Yeah they are pretty mush patties made of hash browns. So yummy. And you are allowed to eat them with ketchup :)
      9. It is sooo good!
      10. Glad Grumpy Cat could make you laugh!

  12. #5 - actually, I think I have heard people talk like that here in ny, it doesn't seem odd to me.

#6 - it's actually a requirement to have chips with your lunch, well, not really, but it is quite the norm where I am, just like you can't have fish without the chips, right?

#7 - fried potato patties with apple sauce - I don't think I have tried them but I have tried fried potatoes with ketchup though never with apple sauce. I don't think I ever had apple sauce before anyhow.

hope you have a sweet day.

    1. #5. I am glad to hear this! :)

#6. I really need to get used to this. I never had chips for lunch and never felt like having them. I should give it a try I guess.

#7. I have never tried them with ketchup. It would be a crime to do it in my home town. Haha.

      Have a great week!

  13. Oh, I didn't know they had cancelled "Go On"; I'm so sorry for its fans and for Matthew Perry, I want him to do well! I hated it when they cancelled "Pan Am". I found that show very entertaining!

    I'm totally with you on #2 :/.

Do you use the word "supermarket"? I totally would, but here everybody calls it "grocery store". There are a lot of British words that I can't get out of my system. They tend to teach British English in Argentina and some words have stuck with me forever. Motorbike and cinema are a few, hehe.

    1. I have never seen Pan Am but I hate it when they cancel shows I like. Go On was really good and I like Matthew Perry so much!

      #2 really sucks!

I use the word supermarket all the time. It is easier to say and it is how I learned it. I learned British English in school too. :)
