Book club!

First of all: Thank you Heather for your help! You are such a sweetheart and I was completely lost without you!! And your blog is more than lovely!

I want to share this awesome book with you:

Actually it is not just the one book, it is a series of books. The diaries of Adrian Mole written by Sue Townsend. The first book was published in 1982 when Adrian was 13 3/4 years old.
The diaries follow Adrian Mole through his life, starting with the teenage years. We learn a lot about his dream of being a writer, his unconditional love to his sweetheart Pandora....and we also learn about his complete failure to achieve all these dreams. The latest book was published in 2009 and we can see that none of his dreams came true. His love-life is a complete mess, his family is completely dysfunctional and his attempts to be a writer are just ridiculous.

You should definitely find out on your own. These books are hilarious. I have never laughed so much reading a book. I have read every single book of the series around 15 times (really) and they still make me laugh so hard.

This is what amazon says about it:

Teen angst has never been such serious business--or this much fun! In his secret diary, British teen Adrian Mole excruciatingly details every morsel of his turbulent adolescence. Mixed in with daily reports about the zit sprouting on his chin are heartrending passages about his parents' chaotic marriage. Adrian sees all, and he has something to say about everything. Delightfully self-centered, Adrian is the sort of teen who could rule a much better world--if only his crazy relatives and classmates would get out of his way. The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole is a riot, and--although written more than 15 years ago--there is something deliciously timeless about Adrian's angst.

One of literature's most endearing figures. Mole is an excellent guide for all of us Observer Marvellous, touching and screamingly funny ... set to become as much a cult book as The Catcher in the Rye .

So if you need a good laugh and love satires: give these books a chance. You won't regret it!

Die Welt kann mich nicht mehr verstehen.

Hallo Ihr Lieben.

I love music. I love listening to it, I love going to concerts, I love to find new great bands, I can play a little bass and saxophone, David is one of the greatest musicians EVER. So music is an important part of my life. I have lots of favorite bands. The lyrics of most of my favorite bands are in English but there are also some great German bands that people outside of Germany probably don't know. That's why I want to introduce you guys to some amazing German bands.

Tocotronic
This band plays a very important role in my life. I went to my first Tocotronic concert when I was 14 and it was my first (good) concert ever. I will never forget the gig, I was just blown away. It was so exciting for me. My parents had to drive my friends and me to the concert because we were too young. It was a 45 minute drive and my parents went out for dinner during the concert. I adored this band (and still do), I even wanted to look like these guys (really!) so I was dressed like this for 2 or 3 years:

That means: cord pants, an Adidas training jacket from the 70s, band shirts and Converse sneakers. It was awesome.
So if you want to listen to one of their songs:

What do you think about it?

Another band that played an important role in my teenage years are the Beatsteaks. I have been to many of their concerts and every single one was amazing. Their lyrics are in English but they are from Berlin. And very nice people by the way. Their guitar player offered me a beer after one of their gigs.
Listen to one of their greatest songs:

Here is another band with German lyrics. Die Sterne. The second concert in my life was one of Die Sterne and two other bands.
The video is just awesome.

And last but not least: This is one of the most famous German bands. Unfortunately, not American-famous....I am not sure if there is any German singer or band that is famous in America. I guess some people might know "99 Luftballons (99 red balloons)" and Rammstein.

What is your favorite band from your home country? Do you like going to concerts?

America vs. Germany - Part I

Hallo Ihr Lieben!

I have been living in America for a while now and I still discover lots of differences (big and small ones) between the two countries. Some are funny, some are just weird.

There is one (not very important) difference between the two countries that is very hard for me to understand. David and I have talked a lot about it. We have completely different opinions on it. I have already read about it on other blogs. I will never understand the American way. But please, please help me.

I am talking about.......ICE-CUBES.

When you order a drink in Germany you get maybe one or two ice-cubes in your glass. That is fine for me. To be honest, most times I order my drinks without ice (except for cocktails). I just don't understand why I need dozens of ice-cubes that only water down my drink. I mean, when my glass is half-full with ice then there is no space for the drink. Plus my coke tastes like nothing but water after a minute. Why do you Americans want that? I just don't understand it. But I really want to. Maybe I drink to slow. As I have said, David and I have talked about it a lot. He always wants ice in his drinks. He wants his drinks to be cold. For me, they are cold enough when they come out of the fridge. Why isn't that cold enough? I really need your help, guys. I need more opinions on this.

I will never forget the first time I went to a movie theater in America. We ordered a huge Dr.Pepper (and I really mean 'huge'. In German movie theaters, you don't get a cup with 2 liters of a drink.). And David told me not to forget the ice. I was confused but I added 3 or 4 ice-cubes to the drink. I guess that wasn't enough. But come on, it takes a while to drink such a huge amount of fluid. And it really just tasted like water at the end. For me that's weird.

But there is one great thing that I would like to have in Germany too: free refills. It's awesome. I mean, you can drink as much as you want and you only have to pay once! Amazing! In Germany you even have to pay for a tiny cup of water. So yay for free refills!
(On the other hand, it is a little annoying that the waitress comes every 2 minutes and asks me if I want more water....but that's another topic. I guess you will read about this soon...)

So how do you feel about ice in your drinks?

The saddest day of my life.

Today I want to tell you about the day I have lost my Mama.

I barely talk about it because it still hurts so much.  My Mama was the greatest person you could ever imagine, she was caring and loving an warm and she had the biggest heart. She always cared about other people first, she wanted to make sure that everybody is fine. She cared for my sick grandparents, she rescued homeless pets. She helped anybody. She was always there for me. She still is. I know it. I can always feel her in my heart and everytime i have to make a decision I ask her for her opinion. I think of her every single day and I miss her so much. It is so hard to lose your Mom...you can never get over this, you can only try to live with it. I am still trying. It isn't easy because she was (and still is) such an important part of my life. I could always ask her for advice. It breaks my heart that David wasn't able to meet her. I am sure he would have loved her. And I know that my Mama loves him. He makes me happy and that is what she always wanted for me. She always made me smile.

This is my Mama:

I was 19 when my Mom died. At that time I was writing my final exams for my Abitur ( which gives you access to study at a university) and I was studying all day and night. I got up pretty early that morning because I had a lot of work to do. I left my room  and when I was in the hallway I knew that something was wrong. The door to my parents bedroom was open. And it was never open during the day. So I looked everywhere and found my Mama on the bathroom floor. She wasn't unconscious. But she wasn't "there'. I can't really describe it. But I immediately did an emergency call. The minutes before  the ambulance and doctors arrived were horrible. I tried to do everything I could but I did not know what was wrong with her....
They took her to the hospital. A helicopter took her to another clinic. They had to put her in an artificial coma. She had a ruptured aneurysm. She was in a coma for 4 weeks. She died 5 days after I wrote my last exam.
Why didn't I wake up earlier? Maybe that could have saved her.

Did you lose a beloved person?

Random facts...

Maybe you want to get to know me better. Maybe you are a new reader of my little blog. Maybe you will stop reading after this post. But I guess I take that risk.

So here are some completely random facts about me.

- I hate onions. I can't stand the taste and it is a horrible feeling to bite in an onion. David loves onions by the way.

Meet my furry friends....

Today I want you to meet my pets: The two cats Lumpi and Tiger. They are brothers and the cuddliest cats I have ever seen. I could tell you stories.....:) And the two bunnies Tiffie and Findus. I have kind of rescued all of them. My former landlord wanted to give the cats away to the shelter because he had 'no use' for them. So they moved in with me back in 2007. The bunnies were really really sick when I started to take care of them. They were only a couple of weeks old and both had a really bad infection. The vet said that she doesn't think they have a chance to survive but they are almost 3 years old and very happy bunnies now.

So please have a look:
This is Tiger. He loves to cuddle, especially with the bunnies. Which is very surprising because I thought they would hate each other. He also loves to sleep on my stomach. For hours.

This is Lumpi. He and Tiger are brothers. He loves to talk and behaves like a dog. He is very good at fetching. Believe it or not.

Meet Tiffie. He is 3 weeks older than Findus and he needs to get his teeth cut every 6 weeks. Unfortunately he can't wear braces.

This is Findus. He loves to eat. A lot.

Last but not least: This is Jerry, my Dad's cat. She loves to sleep. As you can see: She doesn't like photos.

Do you have any pets?

My first post!

Wow, this is exciting. I have read so many blogs over the past months and every single post made me smile so much. And now I am a part of this too. As I said, this is very exciting but also a little scary. All the blogs I read are so fabulous and I know that I have to work a lot on my blog....I am sure the first posts won't be perfect but give me a chance. I am sure I can do better. Haha.

First of all: SORRY! My English is far from perfect! But I am working on it! Thank you for being so understanding.

I have spent this Sunday at the flea market. It is one of my favorite things to do and I always find some great stuff. Today I have been able to find some vintage buttons, a colorful wooden box which I will probably use to store my jewelry, two books and a dog-shaped wooden cork screw. So things you definitely need in your daily life. But I guess a flea market is not about what you want, it is about what you love. All the things I got make me happy so I think that's the main thing.

Aren't these buttons lovely?

In the next posts you will read a lot about my latest fashion and beauty finds, you will see some pictures of my fur friends, I will tell you about the happiest day of my life, the day I have married my best friend David, the books I am reading at the moment, my favorite movies and music and lots more.

I apologize that this post isn't very exciting but I have to admit that I am very nervous. :)

Thank you for reading! Have a lovely day!
XOXO Katrin
