Random Thursday. What I love/hate about Valentine's Day....

Hallo meine Lieben,

happy almost Valentine's Day. LinEm and I are happy that you are a part of it. You guys rock!

Before I start: please take a minute and sign this petition. Another zoo in planning to kill a baby giraffe.

I have to say: I am not a fan. It is not that I hate Valentine's Day...it's more like: I don't care very much. I don't know, but I don't need a special day to show my love. I can do that any day of the year. I am also a huge fan of surprises...and let's be honest: roses on Valentines Day are not the biggest surprise ever. But I guess I should also admit that I am probably not the most romantic person ever.

But I am still able to point out some good and bad things about Valentine's Day. Here you go...

What I love.

I love going to the stores and see all the pink and red stuff. It is kind of cute. But I would love to see that all year round I guess.

Plush toys. I love plush toys. Honestly. I probably still own all the plush toys from my childhood and I love to get new ones. So keep them coming. I am still a child, you know.

Clothes with hearts all over them, especially sweaters.

The day makes people's hearts melt which makes them donate money to animal sanctuaries or other good causes.

Chocolate of course. But not just on Valentine's Day. Heart-shaped chocolate is still cute.

I do like getting cards. All the time.

What I hate.

That the whole day is mostly about making money. You have to buy gifts, you have to buy a card, you have to buy chocolate, you have to buy flowers.

It does not mean that much to give a gift on Valentine's Day. You basically do it because Valentine's Day tells you so.

I don't like the pressure.

I like to give gifts when I feel like giving a gift and not when I have to.

I like surprises. And most Valentine's Day gifts are not really a surprise. And also, most people are disappointed when they don't get any Valentine's Day gifts and that is kind of sad.

It makes a lot of single people feel sad. Which is total crap.

Inspired by my friend Bevchen: Valentine's Day should be more about single people, not couples. Couples don't need it. I love the "Be my Valentine" idea.

What are your thoughts? What do you love or hate about Valentine's Day?

  1. Growing up, I was always taught Valentine's Day was about single people... a day to finally declare your love to that person you've been crushing on all year (he whole "Be my Valentine" thing). I actually like it better that way. I don't know when it became all about couples... people in relationships don't need Valentine's Day! They have the other 364 days of the year to be romantic!

Having said that, I am giving Jan a card this year. I found it in my cross stitch magazine and it amused me so I couldn't resist making it.

    1. I have not really thought about it that way. You are right, it is all about couples but it should really be more about single people. I would like it a lot better that way. The "Be my Valentine" thing really is a cute idea. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

I would love to see the card. :) I am sure it is fantastic. And private. Haha. I am too curious but I have never seen a stitched card! David gets a card as well.

    2. It's not finished yet! Need to do that tonight. I might post a photo on the blog after Velentine's Day... Jan usually doesn't read my blog, but you never know. Don't want him to spot it early!

  2. The only thing I dislike about it is the commercialism. Too many things are commercialized these days and they kind of lose their meaning. Know what I mean? I feel it should be about sharing the love we feel with that special someone. But one thing I STRONGLY feel is that we should celebrate and feel love 365 days a year, and not just one.

    1. Yeah, I totally agree. It should be about love itself and not about buying the biggest gift or something like that. That's just sad.

  3. I hate the focus on gifts. Shouldn't time with your love be enough? And yes, single people get left out. I really feel that, especially for us ladies, no matter how accomplished we are in life--as soon as February 14th rolls around, if you're single, you're somehow "lesser". And that's so wrong!

And I'm so mad about all this zoo crap! What's wrong with these people?! :(

    1. Yeah, the focus on the gift is really stupid. It should be about telling people how much they mean to you. And it is totally wrong to look down on people on VD because they are single. I have been single many many VD's and I was totally fine with it. :)

There is so much wrong with people. I am so angry, I can't tell you! Hope this won't happen!

  5. I'm kinda indifferent on Valentine's Day, if you want to celebrate it go ahead, but I'm not big on it myself.

    1. Yeah, true. I really don't care much. I definitely don't need this holiday.

  6. I feel kind of apathetic about the whole holiday. We don't do any grand gestures for each other on V-Day and we certainly don't go out to dinner because I hate waiting and being in crowds. We normally just do something simple. Like today, while Cory is at work and Lex is at school, I'm heading to a bakery to pick out some goodies to surprise them with after dinner. I much prefer little surprises that the big, expensive ones!

    1. I hate waiting and being in crowds as well! That is why I would never go out on Valentine's day! I love that you prefer to do something simple, that is what I like as well! I hope you found something delicious at the bakery and you are having a fun time!

  7. I do love the decorations and cards associated with Valentine's Day. I'm not a girlie girl by any means but the pink and red IS really cute

  8. We don't really do Valentine's Day. We might go out to eat or I'll cook something special, but we don't buy presents or anything. I think it's nice to celebrate love but I'm not going to celebrate Hallmark.
